Carbon Garden
Environment: Al Gore has conned a world into thinking that carbon dioxide is harmful, and the Supreme Court has ordered the federal government to classify it as a pollutant. Gee, why are they so anti-green?
From all the hype, you'd think CO2 is an environmental toxin on the level of nuclear fallout, a big threat to our existence.
It's not. As any fourth-grader knows, carbon dioxide is necessary for life on Earth. Without it, there's no plant life, and hence no animals and no humans — exactly what some of the more radical misanthropic eco-activists want.
CO2's importance has become obvious to two researchers who found that the Earth, drenched in carbon dioxide, has become a lush sphere of green — far from the charred-brown, hardly habitable orb that environmental activists have been telling us we'll inherit if we don't change our fossil fuel habit.
Using NASA satellite technology, Steven Running of the University of Montana and Ramakrishna Nemani of NASA discovered that over the last two decades the Earth's green content has increased by 6.2%. On one quarter of the plant-covered landmass, vegetation has increased significantly, with decreases in plant life in only 7% of the landmass.
"Biomass is booming," the Financial Post reported Monday in coverage of Running and Nemani's work. "The planet is the greenest it's been in decades, perhaps in centuries."
To listen to Gore and the legion of global warming alarmists, carbon dioxide is our greatest enemy. Not extremist Islamic jihadis. Not widespread economic collapse caused by hyperregulation of the world's economic leader, the U.S. Not global protectionism. Not a planet starved of energy.
Yet it's carbon dioxide concentrations, not empty gases spewed by self-important busybodies, that are making the Earth bloom. CO2 levels are at their highest since humans began keeping records. The increased CO2 is fertilizing plants with needed carbon, making them grow bigger and faster.
Far from threatening the planet, atmospheric carbon dioxide has created a new green revolution. It's unlike any that the environmental groups could ever achieve with the command-and-control, economy-choking central planning they're demanding.
So the next time Gore, some other pandering politician or a dying-to-be-relevant Hollywood jester launches into a lecture on the evils of carbon dioxide, remember: Greenhouse gases have helped produce a greener Earth.
